The following works OK for me, so I don't think the -twoway- command is a problem if all the variable names are correct and exist in your data.

What exactly was the error message?

set obs 12
gen month = _n
expand 2
gen status = 1
replace status = 0 in 1/12
gen ratio1 = uniform()*10
gen ratio2 = uniform()*10
gen ratio3 = uniform()*10
gen ratio4 = uniform()*10
twoway scatter ratio1 ratio2 ratio3 ratio4 month, by(status) connect(l l l l) xlabel(1(1)12)

I tried it without the space (I mistakenly put it back there when I
copied the code for the list) but I get the same error. Any other
ideas?
