Not much to add above other people's comments but you may want to take a
look at Steve Raudenbush's chapter in 

     J. De Leeuw & E. Meijer (eds.), 2008, Handbook of Multilevel
Analysis, Springer. 

He has some discussion of the various models for couples (and other
small level 2 N situations).
