Thanks to all who have replied and enilghtened me as to the historical
legacy of -egen sum()-, the associated problems and their handlings by
Stata Corp.

On the warnings front, I'm generally happy with things as they are.

However, in this instance I was bitten because the results didn't tally
with the current documentation for the commands being used in the
current version of Stata (although I openly concede that the changes are
documented in the -whatsnew8to9- section, and it was perhaps naive or
ignorant of me to treat -egen- functions the same as [P] functions), so
perhaps a warning or mention in the -help-(/-man-) pages is justified in
instances such as this, but clearly this is extra time/work which could
be invested more usefully elsewhere.

Anyway, my lesson has been learned and I shall be checking the old
-whatsnewXtoY- in the future as well as the most recent -whatsnew- in
the future!

Cheers

Neil
