There is a colon missing in your syntax:

sysuse auto
by foreign: count if rep78>4

Apart from that, the -if- qualifier should be valid...

I soted my data for the time and I siad to stata:

by time count if var=="1"

however stata shows me also the other controlvar, for which count is 0
of course.

How can I instruct Stata to show me only the count for which var==1?.
