The answer can be found by looking at the extended macro functions, see
-help extended_fcn- and the example below:

*----------------- begin example --------------
sysuse nlsw88, clear
forvalues i = 1/3 {
	di as result "`: label (race) `i''"
	sum wage if race == `i'
}
