Hello Lucia,

It's hard to say from the information you provide, but my first guess
would be - check that the file SHS.dta in the current directory is in
the Stata format. Not just "has a .dta extension" but really is a
Stata file. Also try:

describe using SHS

to see if it provides meaningful description.
Check that you have an updated Stata and tell us the version/platform.
If the files you are working with are open and available in the
internet let us know.
