I have 100 subjects with 6 obs each. I would like to create a new
variable containing 1s for the first three obs and 2s for the
remaining obs for each id.

=====================================================

An illustration:

     clear
     set obs 100
     generate id=_n
     expand 6
     sort id
     by id: generate byte obsno=_n
     generate byte group = ceil((obsno-0.1)/3)

Hope this helps
Svend
