Well, flip it round then. 

if e(tau2) == . local myresult $S_2
else local myresult = e(tau2) 

The spirit is the same: If one result cannot be found, use the other.

Yes, my first guess was exactly that. Nevertheless, I forgot of
mentioning
that version 2 also has also a global called S_2, which, unfortunately,
provides different results.

I don't think so. But you needn't check that way.

Your branch might as well be

if "$S_2" != "" local myresult $S_2
else local myresult = e(tau2)
