Maarten,
Thanks very much for your reply and suggestion.
Your suggestion solves the problem if one
wants one combined graph with every single member.
But I want a series of separate combined graphs,
each one containing a pair of graphs (e.g., Domestic
and Foreign) but having one be blank when one of the
pairs is irrelevant. (Each combined graph will be
on a separate page in a document.)

I previously tried to use -holes()- to create the
desired graphs, but I didn't find the solution.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

one of the graph pairs being combined is irrelevant,
and I want to exclude the irrelevant graph but have
the relevant member of the pair appear with the
identical layout of other graphs in the series.
What about this:
*------------------ begin example ----------------------
sysuse auto, clear
scatter price mpg, ///
by(rep78 foreign, cols(5) holes(6 7) ///
note("") compact )
*--------------------- end example ---------------------
(For more on how to use examples I sent to the Statalist, see

Hope this helps,
Maarten
