my recent response to austin nichols just missed your reply. i tried all three of your suggestions: 2 of yours and 1 of nick's catplot. your first suggestion as well as inserting -gap- within the -over(year)- option into the catplot suffered from mono-color display, which would not be as effective as the two tone produced by your second (optimal to my need)  suggestion:

graph bar (count) x if ind_methd != "emerg" , over(ind_methd) over(year) asyvar bargap(-30) 

and looking at stata 8 [G] p. 117, thanks to your explanation to my query, i now understand one of the sub-options' role: -asyvar-
