I can't answer that, but my guess would be backward compatibility. In Stata 9, -verinst- did not wrap -about-, but was rather its own (separate) program. Perhaps -about- simply evolved to replace that functionality, but they left verinst.ado as a wrapper to ease the transition.



More seriously, my conclusion is that <verinst> is no longer available/working in Stata 10, and will fix my lecture notes accordingly.

-verinst- still works for me under Stata 10. However, since it is no longer documented (at least not online), you should probably move away from using it.
