An example is probably helpful:

sysuse auto, clear
tab rep78 foreign 
tostring rep78 foreign , gen(repstr forstr)
gen combi = repstr + forstr if rep78 < .
twoway scatter mpg wei, by(combi, cols(2) holes(2 4))
