Thanks for the reply, I can see the advantages of Stata for the purpose 
you suggest, but I suspect to build a model with several interacting 
uncertain events would require extensive programming in Stata. Hence my 
search for a tutorial

Although not involved in health economics (I am an ecologist) I shall 
have a look at the book you suggest, as it looks useful.
