-merge- is a command in official Stata, so if Stata doesn't recognize
it, it seems that your Stata is broken.

Type -which merge- to check whether it is installed. If it is installed
you will get a message like:
C:\Program Files\stata9\ado\updates\m\merge.ado
*! version 2.1.4 16feb2006

if it is not installed you will get a message like:
command merge not found as either built-in or ado-file

If it isn't installed you will probably have to reinstall Stata.

Hope this helps,
Maarten
