but "ssc install xi3" gives the message "nothing to install"

Neither did "search xi3, all." However it is there on SSC and
"ssc describe xi3" and "ssc install xi3" work.
In the past I've used the -desmat- command by John Hendrickx to
create extended interaction effects.
