Never mind, Nick Cox's had pointed me to - labmask - the last time I
asked about this [which I forgot all about].  
Of course I find his response about 2 minutes *after* I posted the
query. :(

Apologies.  I hope labmask will fix the problem.  If not I shall post
again, but for now please disregard the query.
