Scott,

I apologize - I mistyped something. It should've been:

tmap choropleth sr if id!=13 & id!=56, id(id) map(uscoord.dta) palette (Blues) title(`"`"Sex Ratios for 18-24 year-olds, 2000"'"') subtitle ("White Americans") addplot(label STATE if id!=13 & id!=56, x(X) y(Y))

where STATE is a string variable. I mistakenly typed "sr" within addplot. I get the error for when I include STATE, which is a string variable.
