I used to have that problem and then finally figured out that this 
software that lets me use my cell phone as a modem was zapping 
Stata's ability to connect to the Internet.  Anyway, what I did was 
periodically copy c:\ado from one machine to another.  That also 
keeps your routines in sync across machines.  Just be careful if 
something like profile.do needs to be configured differently for 
different machines.
