sriram, maybe if you give us a descriptive example or two what is it you are 
trying to achieve, some of the listers might be able to help. don't forget 
to indicate stata flavor, version & os you are using.

This may be a silly thing. I need to be able to write
a few programs to do data manipulation and construct
dates by grabbing letters from a string of numbers. I
can do this in excel. Can anyone give me pointers to a
few stata resources/books that can help me with
programs in stata.
