For a quick fix, get yourself a capable editor that can handle large binary files (e.g Ultraedit). Load in the file. Search for "IN" and then change it to something else. The variable names are blank padded on the right, so just add something to the end of it.

If you have Stat/Transfer, you can output a "Stata Program + ASCII Data File" and then edit the .dct file to change the variable name.
