many thanks to neil and nick for their advice.

perhaps a little bit more of perseverance would have allowed me to stumble 
upon the axis_label_options either in the [G]manual or on-line help and in 
fact when i double-checked just now, the very ylabel (,nogrid) option that i 
wanted was on the middle of the [G]graph twoway scatter manual that i missed 
earlier.
