Thanks Nick!

I was hoping to put in specific labels to otherwise numeric entries. So the range of variable two is [1,2] and this should be (Male, Female). My reading of infile2 is that it allows you to pick up a string variable (Male,Female) and code that [1,2] and give it labels. You can't do it if the data is already in [1,2].

I also looked at http://www.stata.com/help.cgi?infile2. i must be missing something, since i dont see an example using value labels there.

Yes. The on-line help for -infile2- gives examples.
