I don't know whether -epitab- has an option to test for trends in the
IRR, but you can use -poisson-. One approach is to create a variable
whose values are the midpoints (or medians) of your 5 age categories.
Then enter this variable in a poisson regression model. The advantage of
this approach is that you can include other covariates, as well.

Subject: st: Test for trend in IRRs

Hi,

I have calculated the following IRRs for suicide in
released prisoners:

Age IRR
18-20 5.58
21-24 5.31
25-29 7.84
30-39 9.25
40-49 13.17
50+ 15.59

Is there a formal test to see if the increasing trend
in the IRRs is significant?

Many thanks,

Daniel.
