Check out the ignore option. If the problem is commas or dollar signs then ignore can take care of it. If there are more problems (e.g., letter O vs number 0) , you may need to be more specific in what edits would make the variable look numeric and figure out how to do them to the original variable before destring.

The force option would make them missing, right?
I actually need the data.  This particular variable contains the
verbatim response, which I need Stata to recode into numericals so
that I can categorize them.
Please advise.  Thank you.
