Check out the ignore option.  If the problem is commas or dollar signs then 
ignore can take care of it.  If there are more problems (e.g., letter O vs 
number 0) , you may need to be more specific in what edits would make the 
variable look numeric and figure out how to do them to the original variable 
before destring.
