But what I really need to do is to do is to have

 "//Fs-arc\statastuff\statdata\DataConvert/"

optionally come before or after [5] (PERSONAL) "c:\ado\personal/"

  [1] (UPDATES) "C:\Program Files\Stata9\ado\updates/"
  [2] (BASE) "C:\Program Files\Stata9\ado\base/"
  [3] (SITE) "C:\Program Files\Stata9\ado\site/"

I don't see a clear way to do that with the commands in help adopath.

Any suggestions? or am I overlooking something very simple (probably).
-adopath- does let you add and delete paths. Perhaps delete everything after SITE, and then add paths back in the order you want them searched?

Also, this info is stored in the global macro S_ADO. So, I haven't tried this, but I'm guessing you could just (carefully) change it, e.g.

. display "$S_ADO"
UPDATES;BASE;SITE;.;PERSONAL;PLUS;OLDPLACE

. global S_ADO UPDATES;BASE;SITE;.;c:\mydir;PERSONAL;PLUS;OLDPLACE

. display "$S_ADO"
UPDATES;BASE;SITE;.;c:\mydir;PERSONAL;PLUS;OLDPLACE
