Naji,
Sounds like a good theory, but it is not only in this example where I've noticed the speed differences. Running a series of regressions on an 8.7MB dataset also goes about twice as fast on my PC as on my Mac. I've been playing around w/ changing the "set memory" settings on my Mac, and in some cases I can cut down execution time by setting memory lower, but in others I cannot. And in those cases when I can get the time down, it is not by enough to explain the discrepancies.

Danielle,

One reason : your data file exceeds the MAC memory..
If you have some time giving a try with 20% of the data..

Hi Statalisters,

I've discovered that my ~2.5 year-old PC runs Stata jobs about twice as
fast as my brand new Mac. I am wondering - is this expected performance?

The relevant info:
Stata 9 on both machines, kept up-to-date
Mac: iMac running Tiger (2GHz PowerPC G5, 1GB RAM)
PC: Dell Dimension 8300 runing Win XP Prof (Pentium 4 3GHz, 2GB RAM)

(I realize you can't compare processor speeds.)

Example from a large job:
Job: Infile ~85 vars (x obs) from a file of size ~1.5GB - resulting
dataset size 675KB
Mac time: ~6-7 min
PC time: ~3 min

Can anyone comment on this?
