Subject   st: Stata (v.8) commands for running HLM (v.6) from within Stata

For users of Stata v8 and HLM v6, I have written a set of Stata commands
(hlm.ado) that allow Stata users to run HLM from within Stata.
Specifically, the commands allow users to 1) create MDM files for HLM
analysis from within Stata; 2) write and run HLM2 and HLM3 command files
from within Stata; 3) view HLM results in the Stata viewer. Users can
fit two- and three-level linear and non-linear models; specify precision
and design weights; request the range of hypothesis tests (both deviance
and multivariate hypothesis tests) available in HLM v6; and create
Stata-format residual files. In other words, much of HLM's
functionality can be accessed from the Stata command line (or a
do-file), without opening the HLM windows interface.

Note: these commands use the estimation algorithms in HLM v6 to estimate
multilevel models; they do not use any Stata estimation algorithms (as
does gllamm, for example).  HLM v6 must be installed on the computer;
and the HLM directory must be included in the PATH variable, so that
Stata can find HLM. Note that the commands work with HLM v6 and Stata
v8.2. Note also that hierarchical multivariate linear models (HMLM and
HMLM2) and cross-classified models (HCM2) cannot be fit with the current
version of the commands.

The commands can be downloaded and installed from net-aware Stata by
typing "ssc install hlm" or "net install hlm".

Detailed syntax and help are available by typing "help hlm" in the
viewer.

(apologies for cross-posting).
