Thanks a lot to Fred and Alan's suggestions. 

I have tried something and it prints fine: 
- from Stata, I have saved the graph into wmf format 
- I searched the graph in the folder, clicked on it and it opened itself into jasc paint shop
- from paintshop, I did "copy graph",
- in word, I did a simple "paste" 

and from word, it prints all right.

May be Stata could do something so that importing graphs into a word document and printing them could be a bit more straightforward?

If you save the graph as wmf or emf (using graph export), one of these will 
work properly. I don't remember which. Then import into Word. Try both and 
see which iformat works.
