Oh dear. It looks like your problem is local. On my P2 laptop (Windows
2000, 128mb of RAM), -tab- runs in no time:

. webuse union
(NLS Women 14-24 in 1968)

. tab black union, exact

           |      1 if union
race black |         0          1 |     Total
-----------+----------------------+----------
         0 |    15,260      3,747 |    19,007
         1 |     5,129      2,064 |     7,193
-----------+----------------------+----------
