As Ronnie explained very well, every now and again there is an outburst on the list. On the whole though, we have been able to maintain a high level of civility, and we should congratulate ourselves for this, especially as our tenth anniversary is fast approaching; which is not to say that we should not follow Neil's advice. Problem is, I suspect, that some of these problems arise because some of us don't want to read!

I hope we can put the latest outbreak to rest. I hope too that we will all get together in Boston next month to celebrate our anniversary at the NASUG.

In light of the discussion that occurred overnight (for me at least) I thought the following web-page might be useful, and could possibly be included in the Statalist FAQ (if the maintainer feels it appropriate :-).

http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

It offers very general advice, and I would say that the guidelines offered here are a lot harsher than the friendly environment of Statalist, but I thought it was something that might be of use.
