In addition to Michael Blasnik's suggestions, which are key, 
I suggest that you check out -fs- from SSC. 
At bottom it's just a wrapper for macrolist commands like 

local files : dir . files "*.dta" 

but it may be a smidgen easier to use. 
More importantly, it can take multiple 
file specifications.
