Virgilio might also like to check out G-estimation, which uses a Weibull regression model, which apparently assumes a particular relationship between hazard rate ratio per cigarette per day and the number of days by which each cigarette per day reduces your life expectancy. If in Stata you type

. findit G-estimation

then you will find about a Stata Journal article by Jonathan Sterne and Kate Tilling on G-estimation, and some G-estimation software which you can install.
