Use

-catplot- from SSC

or

-histogram, discrete- after -encode-.
Or Robin could use -histogram, discrete- after -sencode- (downloadable from SSC), if he wants the bars to be ordered non-alphabetically. Another possibility is to use -xcontract- (also downloadable from SSC), and then to use -twoway bar- on the output data set produced by -xcontract-, which contains both frequencies and percentages.

I hope this helps.
