Am I the only person saddened by this blatant rip-off of statacorp? And
from a person employed at a religious institution, no less? Anyone have
any ideas how stata can prevent this from happening and thus preserve the
wonderful model of a company they are?

Sam, I apologize to you, Stata, or anyone else who was offended. It is
just a little paragraph from the reference manual, with exact citation to
the source, so I did not consider it inappropriate. It would not be
unusual for a published paper to, say, quote a paragraph from a book, with
proper attribution. But, if this is considered bad behavior, I will
refrain from doing similar things in the future.
