There are various ways to proceed,
and indeed as said it is often easier
to work independently of -table- or -tabstat-.

One is by preparing a reduced dataset
by using Roger Newson's -pcontract- or
-xcontract-. That is aimed at doing the
calculations; the display is up to you.
The -pcontract- package is superseded by -xcontract-. Users are therefore advised to download -xcontract- and not -pcontract-.

-xcontract- can do a bit of primitive displaying, using its -list()- option. However, as Nick says, any more complicated display is up to the user, and some ways to proceed are detailed in the Stata Journal issues referred to by Nick, and also in .pdf papers documents downloadable from my website (see my signature).
