Thanks to Laurel Copeland and Alan Riley for suggestions on my troubles
getting add-ons installed through SSC. Most of those suggestions we had
already tried; but we still fiddled with permissions for a couple of days
without success.
Regarding permissions by the way, here's something tricky that I learned:
What you see on the properties sheet on a directory only allows you to set
the RO attribute on *files* and has no bearing on the current state of any
RO attribute anywhere in the system (and that seems silly but that's how it
is). Explorer can not alter the RO attribute byte on a directory. To
actually alter the RO attribute, you have to use the attrib command
(through START-->RUN-->CMD).
Still, that did not solve my problems.
So, if all else fails, start over. I uninstalled my Stata, deleted all
relevant directories and started from scratch. And now I do not have the
problem any more. Weird.
All's well that ends well (even if we don't always understand the
mysterious ways of nature -- or, of machines).
