By the way, I checked:

genl prevcheck`X'=moa`X'[_n-1] if tag`X'==1 , by(site subject (rnum))

is legal, but _doesn't_ have the interpretation you
would wish. The parentheses get stripped on entry, so to speak,
and lose their special meaning.
