Thanks Nick for your answer and elaboration on my attempt to efficiency, the 'capture' command was exactly what I was looking for in the first place.
The -levels- ado is clearly an upgrade compared to -vallist-. It might be a good idea to update the FAQ at www.stata.com/support/faqs/data/for.html as well?
