possible to get variable and value labels from SAS into Stata?
Yes. There is some confusion here. SAS stores _variable_ labels in the data file, and Stat/Transfer copies them, no problem. Stat/Transfer can also deal with SAS _value_ labels, which as noted are stored in a separate file. There is quite clear documentation in the Stat/Transfer manual for this issue. The limitation arises in SAS' unique treatment of a range of values as mapping to a single label, which as ST notes does not have a parallel in other stat packages. This requires some separate processing. There is no problem with one-to-one value labels.
