Hi Glenn,

we were working with a dataset of 250,000 observations and some 70
variables, with a size of about 70 MBytes, which occasionally was
blown up to some 200 Mbytes by some transformations. STATA 7.0
(not even SE) gave no proplems on a compputer with 256 Mbytes, so I
can recommend it. I would make sure that you have sufficient
memory, and then all the manipulations you mentions should be
possible.

groetjes,
Ben
