METAN adds 0.5 to all cells of the 2x2 table before analysis. The other
commands (META, METACUM, METAINF, METABIAS, METAREG) require summary
statistics to be calculated, and so the user must handle this issue
beforehand.

This is paraphrased from Egger, Smith, Altman (2001) "Systematic Reviews in
Health Care," an excellent text.

How does stata handle zeros in the denominator for the metananalysis of
relative risks or odds ratios?
