If the variables were correctly stored in SAS (or whatever the data came
from), then you might try to get Stat-Transfer to transfer them
correctly, rather than trying to fix it in Stata later.  Check out the
"Variables" tab in the Stat-Transfer window, where you can specify
storage types for the variables.
