Frequently Asked Questions
- Which Stata is right for me?
- Will Stata run on the Intel-based Macintosh computers?
Yes. All versions of Stata are made as Apple "Universal Binaries",
meaning that they will run at full speed on any Macintosh
platform—whether Intel or PowerPC based.
- Do Intel-based Macs run Stata faster?
Our informal timings indicate that Stata is substantially faster on the
new generation of Intel-based Macs.
- What is the minimum operating system requirement for Stata?
Stata 10 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or greater.
- Is there a 64-bit version of Stata that allows more memory to be allocated?
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) is 64-bit compatible, but it is not a true 64-bit
operating system. Tiger offers 64-bit support to command-line (console)
applications but not to GUI (graphical user interface) applications like
Stata. Although StataCorp offers a console version of Stata, it is
currently only 32-bit.
Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is a true 64-bit operating system, and 64-bit
versions of
both GUI and console versions of Stata will be available in the future.
- Is Stata compatible with Mac OS X 10.5?
Yes. There is currently only a 32-bit version of Stata,
but it is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5, even when run on 64-bit Macs.
- Does Stata take advantage of the Velocity Engine on Apple's G4s and
G5s?
Accurate statistical analysis requires 8-byte (double-precision)
floating-point support. The Velocity Engine supports only 4-byte
(single-precision) floating point, greatly improving the performance of
applications such as graphics and multimedia applications but is not
adequate for applications that require high levels of precision such as
Stata. Even so, Stata will take advantage of the both the G4 and
G5 high-performance processors. On a G5, the greater double-precision
performance over other processors makes Velocity Engine
support unnecessary.
- Will Stata run on my Power Mac?
Stata will run on any Power Mac that supports OS X.
- Can I trade datasets with my friends who use Stata for Windows?
Yes. A Stata dataset created on a Macintosh can be used, without
translation, on any computer running Stata and vice versa. The same
goes for graphs, programs, and any other file Stata uses or produces.
- Does a guarantee come with Stata?
A 30-day, satisfaction or your money back, guarantee comes with your
purchase.
